  • Wedding Band - Alternatives

I tried to tell Melissa that the substance in the wedding band doesn't have to be gold.  She wouldn't buy it.  I pointed out to her that a wedding band in the olden days was sometimes a braid of grass stems that deteriorate but meant that the couple was on their honeymoon, so to speak as long as the braid lasted.  Then it was back to work as usual.  She told me she wasn't living in a tipi and that she wanted something that was symbolic of permanence in OUR society.

It wasn't that she's mercenary--if that were the case, I wouldn't be marrying her in the first place.  It's just that finances are tight for me right now and I'm taking on a lot to even think sensibly about getting married while still finishing my degree.  We both agreed to take the money that would have been spent on an engagement ring and put it as a down payment on a rent to own condo in the town where we will be living after we're married.  In the meantime, it's a place to save some money on housing costs. We're getting married at Thanksgiving vacation so that's settled.  The wedding band is starting to be an issue.

She wants matching rings, and agreed they could be plain bands which we both prefer.  She even told me that she preferred white color to the yellow color.  I promised her I would see to it before Thanksgiving and that she'd just have to trust me. She laughingly said, "No pop can rings--promise?"  I assured here I wasn't quite that tacky.   It did give  me an idea though.  I talked it over with Dad.  Even though I'm basically on my own, I still respect his judgment and opinion.  His best advice was "Talk to your mother."

Well, I should have done that in the first place.  She marched me down to her favorite jeweler and then very discreetly proceeded to encourage me to look at a stainless steel wedding band.  They are beautiful--very sleek and elegant.  I made the decision on the spot to bring Melissa in to look at them.  To say the least, she was thrilled.  It definitely was an idea that she hadn't thought about before. It is unusual enough that she could have a wedding band to be proud of and it's much broader than the very narrow white gold band I would have had to go in debt for.
